You’ve Found Me

Good. I’m glad you’ve found me. Now… Let’s get a few things straight. I started this blog because I wanted to force myself to do video. I thought that a lonely, empty blog would get me into action… Nope. I’ve been doing a stellar job of avoiding the whole video thing – I even went so far as to loan my camera kit out to someone so I had a legitimate excuse for not doing video… I’ve got it back now…

I’ve been thinking about what my big issue with it might be. It’s particularly odd because one of my jobs is hosting TV programmes… so why do I have an issue with doing video on the web? Well, for one thing, when I do TV things it’s not ‘me’. I tend to separate myself, the real me, from the person on telly. It puts a layer of protection between myself and the evilness of TV: “That’s not me they’re talking about/rejecting/taking the piss out of… so it’s OK.”

Consequently, I, me, Gia, is a bit “funny” when it comes to being on camera. I’ve always hated being interviewed on camera; I’ve always hated being ‘a guest’ (unless my role is to talk about a particular subject ie computers/tech); I’ve always shied away from any TV stuff that gets close to me.

But…

I’m not about to do ‘reports’ about things. Leave that to the professionals. You want reports? Watch TV. Besides, there is nothing worse than a badly produced videoblog (oh, wait, except a badly produced podcast)… I don’t have the time to produce rich, good quality videos about the topics I most like to discuss here: religion, politics, nerd stuff. And after over a decade of working in telly, I just can’t do total crap to show the whole world. I do, well might, have the time, however, to do something else…

I enjoy the ‘net because someone else isn’t controlling my entertainment. I can dip in and out of blogs, sometimes staying only long enough to read one little post, sometimes delving into the comments, sometimes going through the archives… I don’t think there’s any point in doing a video blog that isn’t like… well, a blog. With video done traditionally the video maker controls your experience. I’m trying to learn about some different ways of doing video so that I can create something new…

Mmmm… nice colour scheme – did you use your own blood, or somebody else’s?

    Make. That. Video. Now.

  2. john says:

Do you do everything Hugh tells you?

And no I haven’t started my blog yet. I have the blogger account still but now I’m all confused – should I stay basic or go where the hep cats go.

  3. gia says:

    Thanks, Euan!

@Lloyd: I WILL! I WILL! (it’s the blood of a thousand bloggers I’ve trampled on to get to where I am today…;)

@John: Hugh tells me to do very little, but he’s been bugging me about this for a year… It was Lloyd’s video blog that tipped me over the edge!

  4. Daisy says:

    And about bloody time too!

p.s. Please ignore the men re the red, it’s gorgeous. Would you trust any of them to decorate your home? No, I thought not ;-)

  5. Jas says:

If you listen carefully, you can hear Google crying :-(

  6. Richard says:

Awesome! (As I believe the young folk say these days…)

  7. gia says:

Jas, I don’t have to listen that carefully I can hear it wailing loud and clear… :(

  8. jas says:

    It’s okay, we have a plan :-)

  9. Lloyd says:

@gia – glad to have done some tipping. Did some casting for episode 2 yesterday – this time, there will be monkeys.

@daisy – You make painting your blog with blood sound like it’s a bad thing. ;-) I think it’s the most stylish and gorgeous design I’ve seen for ages – I want to come here rather than read it in my aggregator. But you’re right about the decorating – my place is just bare white walls with a few pictures dotted about.

Nice to see another vlogger and a great piece on Vietnam. I couldnt agree more – I try to shoot it in one take and cut down on the editing time as a) I’m not an editor and b) it takes forever and I would probably post about once a year. Keep it up!

  11. Daisy says:

@Llloyd – you’ve just given me an idea, thank you!

  12. Daisy says:

Erm, sorry, that’ll be Lloyd with 2 ll’s. My finger slipped, honest. Do you think they’ll demand the return of my Welsh passport? ;-)

  • Observer Article -

Honestly, this isn't a blog just about Brian. That would be really weird... but... indulge me just a bit longer.

Some of you may have seen the article about Brian in the Observer today. Now, you guys are intelligent and realise that not everything you read in a newspaper is accurate. This was made absolutely clear to me this morning as I was sitting in my bathrobe, hair all over the place, barefoot, all coffee breath, unshowered and read, "he married his American wife, glamorous TV presenter Gia Milinovich, in secret." :-/

    Ah well...
