I know Jakob Lodwick who started Vimeo well before YouTube existed – he’s been making web videos for years now… I bet they are *gutted*… I wonder why YouTube took off and Vimeo didn’t. Ahhh.. cos Vimeo is really well designed and works fantastically…

I use YouTube, not for copyrighted stuff necessarily – though being able to find clips of telly programmes is sometimes useful – but to watch videos that real people are making…

I think that’s a slightly sweeping statement – I think the reason many people use it is that it’s full of hard to find stuff. It just so happens that a lot of copyrighted material is hard to “find” :)

I think the more appropriate question is, why did anyone? The only reason anyone uses it is that it’s full of copyrighted material.
