soulmining, I *promise* you will get *loads* more from it next time. I think the first viewing can be a bit overwhelming for a lot of people- though many people loved being overwhelmed by the film, some don't like how it makes them feel at all. The second viewing allows people to watch it without either being so tense that you're worried a vein is going to burst or being so blown away by the visuals that you sit there with your mouth hanging open...

I also honestly think 'Sunshine' is a 'grown-ups' film. I remember watching Mona Lisa with my mother when I was 17. Everyone was raving about it at the time, so we went along. I thought it was boring, my mother cried through almost the whole thing... I'm 100% positive that now I am the same age as my mother was then, *I* would be deeply moved by it and cry the whole way through if I watched it again...

Re: IMDB... *sigh* I'm starting to think the destruction of the entire human race mightn't be a bad idea... ;)

It's funny, I was reading some of the message boards on IMDb today (boy, there are some ignorant people lurking there, I don't know how you put up with some of the abuse) and I was wondering exactly what your own *personal* take on the film was - and this piece sums it up perfectly. You manage to express some of the themes in the film so much better than I was able to in my own review! I'm really looking forward to watching Sunshine again next week, I really want to see how it appears on second viewing... :)

Definitely NOT sh*t!! Thanks for posting this here for us to read.

My take is this - there are so many thoughts and ideas orbiting the movie and the people involved in it that after eighteen months of absorption in it, it's become a passion of complexity that is hard for those involved to talk of it in simple terms. I've witnessed this. It's not pretension, it's just understandable absorption.

Upshot - I would guess that in the eyes of the editor it's too smart for a newspaper piece, or at least the piece they thought they'd get.

P.S. The irrepresible editor in me would suggest that you start from "When i started ....." if you choose to send it to other publications.

Very nice. Shame about the Guardian but there's no accounting for taste, and those who work for mainstream media are required to undertake a partial lobotomy before employment anyway. Their - and their readers' - loss, sadly.
