A New Reel

I’ve just cut a new reel… What do you think? Too long? Too short? Too… something?

I had to add Yoko at the end. :)

the beginning might cause Olympic epilepsy fit and one might cause other problems like not looking in your eyes.

  2. Lee says:

Not sure about the name/logo/font at the start… there’s always something great about seeing a formal intro at the start that makes an impression with the vitality of the presenting/performance after that.

Also might be nice to list the shows name you are featured on (just quick, keep it pacey).

Also i recommend throwing it up on Viddler and adding tags and comments as the video plays, ably demonstrated by Suw Charman – Chocnvodka

    Lee-

The front title does look crap at this size and low quality (it’s gone all boxy and shite). I will do another one. I’ve yet to try Viddler myself though it definitely looks great…

  4. Penny says:

I *like* the first part, actually, aside from the title. It is very MTVish. I guess it all depends in what you like to see in vids.

What are you doing in the end part, though?

Also, I thought that the vids that you made during your trips to Vietnam and Jeruselem were really good. I especially enjoyed the end sequence in the Vietnam vid set to ‘The End’ by The Doors. Could those vids have a place in your reel?

I’m not a presenter or anything like that, so this is just my (relatively uninformed) opinion.

  5. dazza says:

You were clearly influenced by an editing genius with your opening montage.
I’d try and add quick, one-liners to the montage. For example, just turn the sound up on that first clip of you next to the white board. The presenting is very good and very interesting.

    Dza

  6. Penny says:

Ok (deep breath), here’s my second attempt (the first not being very successful) at giving intelligent RELEVANT feedback (I DO mean well..sigh):

    1) GREAT opening sequence. I agree with Dazza.
    2) Meat of the reel should have more of you (as in, the camera is focused exclusively on you) doing presenting. Any extraneous activity that takes the focus off of you should be excised, IMHO. That said, the only places I could see that this might be an issue were the ‘Sunshine’ clip and one segment of ‘Rocketboom’ (I want to see YOU not that other presenter).
    3) I saw very brief clips of things in the opening shots that I’d liked to have seen fleshed out in the meat of the reel (i.e.: you were typing at the computer (?) in one shot, and I was wondering what that was about (I thought you were doing it at the END of the clip for some reason in my first post). Right now, I only see the ‘Demolition Day’ stuff, the ‘Sunshine’ clip, the ‘Born in a Prison’ clip, Rocketboom, and the ‘one good wrist wristwatch’ clip. Maybe part of the ‘Demo Day’ stuff can be replaced with a clip from another show you did.
3)The only beef that I have with the ‘Sunshine’ clip is that I see a lot of the set but not a lot of you. And the camera was jiggling a lot in the first seconds–made me a tad dizzy. I understand your rationale for including the clip, but could you edit out the jiggly part?
    4) You seem to have a great riff going with Charlie (?? Was he the guy in both the ‘Rocketboom’ and the ‘Born in a Prison’ BBC clip?). If there are any more of those kind of clips lying around, those would be good to include.

  7. giagia says:

Heh, Dazza. Of course, I was influenced by you! I wanted a piece of music where I could show lots of little bits in a very short space of time… The Underworld song is perfect for that…

Penny, I agree there’s too much Amanda Congdon, but then it just shows how shit she is compared to me. ;) Also, the reel is really at the maximum length it should be I really can’t add much more… I had loads more in it initially, but it was really far too long. People will watch *maybe* the first 2 minutes at most and if they like it they’ll watch to the end… Hence the ‘several short clips’ at the top and slightly longer pieces at the end… It could get shorter, but not longer.

I could, however, cut a longer version with loads more clips for the web…

Anyway, I just got back from a weekend in Geneva… and the person who was supposed to come and feed my cats… didn’t. :-/

  8. Penny says:

Yeah, I thought there might be a length limit to the clip. Please do add the longer version to the site, though–would very much like to see it.

Sorry to hear about the cats! I hope they are ok.

  9. Tim Clague says:

For me I’d stop after the Sunshine bits. That gave me a good enough quick flight around the Gia world. If I wanted to ask about anything else or see more then I could do that a meeting. Good range of clips built around a single personality – that’s the key and that’s what you have here

  10. giagia says:

Good. Cos, of course, I do have multiple personalities so I’m glad *that* wasn’t conveyed. ;)

  11. Mark says:

I agree with most of the criticism here: font needs changing of course and the length was perhaps just a tad too long for me although that may have more to do with my age than any useful aesthetic.

The comparison of you versus Rocketboom’s Finest(tm) does show us – the enlightened – just how shit she really is but I’m still not sure she should feature beyond a split-second glimpse and her opening half a syllable since your reel is targeting those in the media and they sadly lack our finesse at spotting useless crap.

  12. Braylin says:

I love your new reel, Gia! Of course I would like to see more clips, but its short and sweet and to-the-point.

Honestly, this isn't a blog just about Brian. That would be really weird... but... indulge me just a bit longer.

Some of you may have seen the article about Brian in the Observer today. Now, you guys are intelligent and realise that not everything you read in a newspaper is accurate. This was made absolutely clear to me this morning as I was sitting in my bathrobe, hair all over the place, barefoot, all coffee breath, unshowered and read, "he married his American wife, glamorous TV presenter Gia Milinovich, in secret." :-/

    Ah well...
