Movie Mash-up

Yesterday the winner of MySpace’s MovieMash-up competition was announced- Vito Rocco. He’s won the chance to direct a feature film. His winning film is here.

Two people I’ve been working with for the past couple years were part of the judging panel.

  • Andrew Macdonald was the producer of ‘Sunshine’ and one of my very favourite people ever, ever, ever. You can see Andrew talking about his favourite entries in the competition as well as a bit about breaking into film here.
  • Christian Grass works at Fox. I call him ‘The Head of Europe’, he’s got a proper title, but ‘Head of Europe’ sounds right. He’s one of the ‘good guys’ I’ve met at Fox. He’s passionate about film, he isn’t one of these people who thinks about film purely as a business, he cares about the *art*. He rules. You can see him talking about his favourite entries in the competition and how to break into film here.

Both Andrew and Christian said they liked the film by Tom Harper, Cubs. It’s an idea I thought of ages ago which I think would be an excellent urban sport to start. ;) Have a watch.

Good films but I’m lost – why “movie mashup”? What’s mashup about them?

(Also, if you’re logged into the site, you can’t see the anti-spam word by default)

  2. Suw says:

Hm, yes, I’m confused about how that’s a mash-up. It’s a very good short film, but it’s not a mash-up as far as I can see. Not that i expect you to have the answer, Gia, but if anyone does, I’d like to know!

  3. Thanks for the links!

Cool advice from groovy people ;)

I expect someone at MySpace thought ‘mash-up’ sounded cool without knowing what it meant.

I believe the idea behind having the community “mash-up and mix” the film beginning to end is why mash-up.

Also my anti-spam word was sunshine. Hah!

  • Observer Article -

Honestly, this isn't a blog just about Brian. That would be really weird... but... indulge me just a bit longer.

Some of you may have seen the article about Brian in the Observer today. Now, you guys are intelligent and realise that not everything you read in a newspaper is accurate. This was made absolutely clear to me this morning as I was sitting in my bathrobe, hair all over the place, barefoot, all coffee breath, unshowered and read, "he married his American wife, glamorous TV presenter Gia Milinovich, in secret." :-/

    Ah well...
