Really enjoyed the talk. Brian should have his own show…. :)

  2. Hugh says:

Wow – that was amazing to watch! I’ve known the very basic basics about the LHC for a while, but never quite what was so important about the Higgs particle, or how much we know, and can expect to find out.

Thanks for posting that, and thanks to Brian for, well, knowing it all in the first place!

  3. Amanda says:

Brian really makes me want to learn more about science. I wonder how many people tell him that on a regular basis. My guess is that loads of people feel the same way.

  4. giagia says:

Actually, a *lot* of people tell him that! Loads of people send him emails telling him that they were inspired to study science at university after seeing him talk. That always makes him really happy.

When I first met him I was already a ’science groupie’ – I think I was reading a biography of Richard Feynman when I first met him! But what struck me about Brian was how emotionally connected with ’science’ he was. He talks about his work (as do all of his physics colleagues) with the kind of passion and excitement one normally associates with artists or musicians… What Brian is particularly good at, though, is conveying those feelings to people who have little-to-no previous scientific knowledge.

He’s also really good at not making you feel stupid. I never feel like I’ve asked a really stupid question… in fact, one of my questions has prompted him to write a book with one of his colleagues to explain it! He’s got a book deal and everything! *^_^*

  5. PhysTeach says:

amazing….. just watched it with my husband. Inspiring!

  6. Andrew says:

What is the name of the equation he talks about at 6:30? Or is it a combination of equations?

  7. giagia says:

    Andrew, It’s the Standard Model.

  8. Tim Clague says:

Watched this last week – a great TED talk – and I recommend that everyone checks back to TED often and picks some other talks. I usually go for the ones that I wouldn’t normally go for if you see what I mean! A quick way to get out of my ’silo’
