Film Costume Nerdery

Visit my RHPS-based costume blog here.

Several months ago I started a few projects making outfits or items of clothing that I could wear that were replicas of or inspired by costumes from films. I’ve got one full “inspired by” outfit and three ‘replica’ items I’m working on, from three different films. So far.

I first saw the Rocky Horror Picture Show 30 years ago. I loved it. I loved it more than you ever did. Don’t bother arguing with me about that. Seriously. Yea. Don’t start. Honestly. Are we good now? OK.

The second film costume project I started and the first I finished was to make a pair of shoes like the first ones worn by Frank N Furter in the film.

They are peep-toe d’Orsay platform heels. Black, with a while heel, covered in glitter and rhinestones.

The only reason I even thought of doing this was because I found these shoes on Etsy.

They are from the 70s and the perfect shape, but metallic blue with flowery fabric on the front. They are gorgeous, but I don’t do blue.

I started by colouring the heel white using Dylon Shoe and Accessories Colour. This can be used on leather, imitation leather and canvas. Dylan shoe dye will not work.

It took several coats to cover it fully.

Then I used black Dylon shoe colour to colour the rest of the shoe black, including the sole.

Next it was time for glitter. I used white glue- goes on white, dries clear- in a thin layer and sprinkled on the glitter. I did the white heels first, let that dry and then did the black uppers.

Next rhinestones- clear ones on the heel. Black ones, very small blue ones and dots of green glitter on the vamp. I stuck the rhinestones on with E-6000 glue.

Done.

I wore them out for the first time the other night. They look fab!

  • A costumer in the making, but what really impressed me, this paragraph:

“I first saw the Rocky Horror Picture Show 30 years ago. I loved it. I loved it more than you ever did. Don’t bother arguing with me about that. Seriously. Yea. Don’t start. Honestly. Are we good now? OK.”

    Just excellent!

    :o)
