“The Great Schlep aims to have Jewish grandchildren visit their grandparents in Florida, educate them about Obama, and therefore swing the crucial Florida vote in his favour. Don’t have grandparents in Florida? Not Jewish? No problem! You can still become a schleper and make change happen in 2008, simply by talking to your relatives about Obama.”
There have been many times over the years when I’ve been extremely proud of my lovely husband. His appearance on Newsnight the other night is right at the bloody top of the list. Delight with me in the massive smackdown he gives to Sir David King who, believe it or not, is the President of the British Association of the Advancement of Science. Seriously.
During the Republican primaries I was thinking “You know, if McCain wins the nomination and ends up winning the election, it’ll be OK. He’s not completely batshit insane, certainly compared to the Bush White House. So if it happens, I’ll be OK with it.” I was always going to vote Democrat, of course, but wasn’t massively worried about McCain.
I have now completely changed my mind. With this whole Sarah Palin thing, McCain has shown that he is clearly chaotic and dangerous. He should not be in charge of a country which has so very much at stake. America has a chance to step out of the darkness, a chance to wake-up, a chance to join this wonderful world we live in. This will NOT happen with McCain in the White House. If he puts so very little thought into who he chooses as his running mate – the person who could end up being the Vice President of the country for 4 whole years- what amount of contemplation will go into, say, starting another bloody war? The documentary explores the idea of Time – what we think it is, what it isn’t and asks ‘does it exist at all?’ He talks to all kinds of people from the Director of the US Naval Observatory which keeps the Master Clock, to cosmologist Max Tegmark (who acts out what it would look like if he were to fall into a black hole), to theoretical physicist Neil Turok who talks about how Time may *not* have had a beginning. He explores Einstein’s theory of Time as well as newer theories of ‘granulated’ Time…
X-Files: I Want To Believe producers Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz did a signing at Forbidden Planet in London on the 31st of July. Fans from all over Europe came to meet them. Here’s a little taster of what it was like…
First, for TONS of videos, photos, conversation on the X-Files, join Big Light. It’s for fans, old and new of the X-Files.
Now, this video gives an idea of what kind of fun was had by all at the X-Files Sneak Peak at the LAFF. It was made by the lovely Mya. Music: Walking in Memphis by Cher. (More below the fold)
One thing I’ve been finding very interesting since I started doing stuff for the X-Files is the almost obsessive need for some of the fans to not believe anything, yet neither do those ‘unbelievers’ attempt to seek out the ‘truth’. They think they’re being ‘a Scully’, when, in fact, they are merely being a ‘reverse Mulder’- they adamantly don’t want to believe. Consequently, I’ve been getting quite a lot of, shall we say, “feedback” from some people on YouTube.
I’ve been accused of perpetuating a hoax, called a fake, unprofessional, a lying sack of shit (nice), all because I did a nerdy little video of myself opening the script for the first time which they don’t think is real. I’ve done a video response, replied in the comments, written about it here, but to no avail, there are still people who react in an overly hostile way to something they don’t want to believe.
Last Thursday, I had a phonecall with Frank Spotnitz to talk about various things- the trailer, the Revelations DVD, the soundtrack, the premiere and the LA Film Festival. During the call he confirmed that I did, indeed, read the X-Files script. I’m waiting for him to approve the edit of the whole call, until then, here’s a clip of that..
The lovely VinVin has made a video talking about his personal role in getting the whole Indiana Jones on Seesmic thing to happen. He did so much that was unseen internally within Seesmic that I just want to thank him here. Thank you, lovely VinVin!
For the record: my son said that ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ is the best film he has ever seen. He’s seen the previous three films, but only on DVD, so the whole ‘Indiana Jones in the cinema’ experience blew his 11-year-old mind AWAY. My take on it: Shia LaBeouf’s order of the Indy films was right on the money.
The day has come. I can start talking about the X Files: I Want To Believe! I am an X Files fan- I own books, toys, trading cards, I even used to dye my hair red like Scully- so when I found out about the new film I emailed a colleague at 20th Century Fox who I met when doing Sunshine and told him that I’d love to help out on the film in any way possible.
I was hoping that I’d maybe get to organise a bloggers’ screening or something… Imagine my joy and excitement when they asked me to do a bunch of ‘online stuff’ for the film for the next few months! The first thing I needed to do, however, was read the script…
Water Lilies opens this week in London at the Curzon Soho, Brixton Ritzy, Cineworld Fulham, Odeon Swiss Cottage; the Duke of York’s in Brighton; and the Cameo in Edinburgh. I’ve already posted the trailer and a few clips, now I’ve got the first 6 minutes of the film (press play to watch). Read the rest of this entry »
As you probably know by now, I’m working on the online stuff for WaterLilies. I just found out that it’s in Time Out’s Critics Choice this week. Whooo-hoooo!
It’s released this week in London at the Curzon Soho, Brixton Ritzy, Cineworld Fulham, Odeon Swiss Cottage; the Duke of York’s in Brighton; and the Cameo in Edinburgh. Other dates can be found on the website under Cinema Listings.
I thought I’d put up the trailer and some clips for you to watch here. Also, once it’s up and ‘out there’, I will add links to where you can watch the first 10 minutes of the film. Read the rest of this entry »
I’m watching loads of TED Talks as Brian and I are off to TED in a few weeks (look at Friday’s speakers *ahem*). There’s just so very many excellent talks… I saw this one this morning and thought at least a few people here would be interested in it.
Friend him here! You need to be signed into Facebook, but if it still doesn't work for you then sign into Facebook and search for Jonathan Stephen Ross.
Phew! I can finally say something about this. Brian was up for Dawkins' job, down to the final three (or was it four?!), but didn't get it. And the winner is...
A couple people in the comments have said they think Brian should take over from Richard Dawkins when he retires this year. If you're on Facebook, you can join the Brian Cox For Dawkins' Job group. Not started be me incidentally.
Honestly, this isn't a blog just about Brian. That would be really weird... but... indulge me just a bit longer.
Some of you may have seen the article about Brian in the Observer today. Now, you guys are intelligent and realise that not everything you read in a newspaper is accurate. This was made absolutely clear to me this morning as I was sitting in my bathrobe, hair all over the place, barefoot, all coffee breath, unshowered and read, "he married his American wife, glamorous TV presenter Gia Milinovich, in secret." :-/
Ah well...
