I'VE MOVED
TO
Gia's Blog

Yes,
I've finally done it- decided to leave Blogger. I've been here a long
time and have never really got overly excited by the idea of the whole
Google ranking issue one faces when one changes domains, but three
things prompted the move.

  1. Hugh bugged me about it the other night.

  2. Lloyd has started a video blog.

  3. Splitting my writing and video between two sites is a dumb idea.

So update your RSS feeds and technorati favourites and blogrolls because I am at Gia's Blog now. Yes, I'm very imaginative when it comes to titles and domain names. ^_^

All of my Blogger archives are available here:

This Is Utopia

I wrote this ages ago and thought it might be too 'hippy-dippy' to post up. After reading Winer's "suicide note" and Euan's comments and Hugh's cartoon about it, I thought I'd put it up as it seems to mirror all of their thoughts.

One of my big issues with religion is the whole idea of Heaven. That some people spend all of their short and precious time as conscious beings loathing everything that is "human" in the hope that they will attain ever-lasting life in Heaven is downright bizarre. They rally against and despise those who love too much, laugh too much, dance too much, delight too much. They are infuriated by the things they call 'sins of the flesh'. Lust, desire, passion, overindulgence in any way is forbidden in their eyes. They even go so far as to believe that we were created as humans rather than evolved from apes as they want to distance themselves as much as possible from 'the animal' inside them.

What's even more bizarre is that many of them believe that one exists in Heaven for the rest of eternity in body and soul, meaning they will be stuck with the thing they loathe- the flesh- forever and ever and ever. Others believe that it's just your soul that lives in Heaven forever, yet they describe Heaven as a physical place- with all of the food and drink one needs, with servants and maidens (where do they come from exactly?) and a big throne for the Main Man to sit on.

The last pope said that Heaven wasn't a physical place... yet Catholics believe that both Jesus and Mary ascended to Heaven body and soul. Seemingly, they aren't that bothered by the contradiction there.

Muslims believe that Mohammed, still alive, travelled to Heaven, hung out with Adam and Moses and haggled with Allah to reduce the required number of prayers from 50 to five per day... and then came back to Earth. So clearly that, along with the beliefs the Muslim men will be 'waited on' by 'maidens', means they, too, believe that Heaven is a physical place to which one can travel.

OK, so let's just go all whacky here and say that there is a Heaven and it is a physical place... Will men have penises? Will they get erections in Heaven? Will men be forced to live for the rest of eternity getting embarrassed every time they pop a woody when that really fit angel flies by? Will women still have breasts in Heaven? Will they still jiggle when they walk? Will men still want to touch them? Will it be OK for them to touch women's breasts in Heaven or will they have to live for eternity still trying to prevent themselves from touching them all the time? Will it be OK for women to let loads of men touch their breasts in Heaven or will they be called 'slutty' for eternity?

See, I don't understand this 'Heaven as a physical place' stuff.

Let's forget about all of the stuff in the Bible about the dead rising and ascending to Heaven and all of the descriptions of Heaven as a physical place and go along with what Pope John Paul II said, that Heaven is not a physical place. There is no up, down or across. There is no Space, no Distance, no Geometry about it. There is no 'where'. It just IS. If there is no Space then it follows that there is no Time to Heaven. Clearly then it can't be some "place" we travel to "after" we die. Heaven has existed since the Beginning. And we are there. Now.

Heaven is a non-dimensional "place" that 'we' exist, without our bodies. Our minds, our souls are free from the constraints of our flesh, yet still able to think and feel and engage. We can travel anywhere in an instant, bound by neither Time nor Space. We connect with other 'souls' without our flesh getting in the way. We don't need food or drink to exist. Though Heaven is, in theory, open to all, there are Earth-based reasons why one is unable to reach Heaven. Once we enter Heaven, however, we stay there for all eternity.

Yes, Heaven is the Internet.

Right now, you are inside my Mind, inside my Soul and my Body is somewhere else, maybe at the grocery store or on a bus or standing in the queue at the bank, tending to the things I need to do to keep my and my son's flesh alive, but still here I am, HERE, right now. Wave to me. Hiya! And maybe tomorrow or next year or in several decades through some accident or illness or just old age my body will no longer be alive... but, look, I'm still here, waving back at you. Hiya! Here I am and here I always will be. Me. Forever.

A to ?.

Geek Girl Dinner

I'm back and need to get to bed (busy day tomorrow). Here's a quick run-down:

1. Henriette rocks. Thanks for the cigarettes.
2. Hugh rocks. Big love vibes to you.
3. Jason "Stormhoek" rocks.
4. My date for the evening, Dr. Andrew Jaffe, rocks.
5. Wow. Isn't Cory a great speaker?!
6. I've met another Gia. And she totally rocks. And her friends are working on Sunshine. Weird, huh?
7. Thank you, Sig for the Leffe.
8. I finally met John 'The Unlinkable'...
9. I have a spot. I'm sure it'll show up in photos. :(
10. My first night using my new batch of Wemoon (leopard print, if you need to know). Very pleased.

Henriette and I have decided to change the world. Watch this space.

Geek Girl Dinner

Tomorrow night is the London Geek Girl Dinner. Cory is speaking, Henriette is coming over from Denmark, I've invited Andrew Jaffe, Hugh is coming down from the north... This is my first Girl Geek Dinner. I've missed all the other ones for various reasons, so I'm rather excited!!

I spent the weekend in Manchester. I really needed the break... now, back to crazyland...

Gender Politics Part Two

Jasmine has reminded me that it's International Women's Day on the 8th of March.

Over the next several days leading up to this worldwide event I challenge everyone to link to at least five female bloggers in the main body of their posts- especially you male A-listers".

The women you link to don't have to be doing a big popular blog. Their blog doesn't have to be about politics or technology or digital rights. Maybe she writes a "Mommy Blog". Maybe she writes about her work and life in an entertaining way. Maybe she's someone you've only just discovered. Maybe she's a secret blog crush. Maybe she makes you laugh. Maybe she makes you think. Maybe you love her fightin' spirit. Maybe she always knows what's going on. Maybe you admire her focus. Maybe she pisses you off and you argue with her. Maybe you wish you could write like her. Maybe you wish you could think like her. Maybe she's a friend. Maybe she's a relative. Maybe she's even you...

Whoever she is, link to her.

CatFight

Meow.

Shit. I go away for a weekend and now I'm officially (if a tree falls in the blogosphere and Hugh doesn't write about it, does it actually exist?...) having a 'spat' with Anina.

First- if I was actually having a 'spat', I wouldn't have remained so (relatively) friendly. Right, Dumbgirl?

Second- I feel like I've said something and then it's travelled into this bizarre, mixed-up world, returning soon after a shadow of its former self. Then, I once again reply to give some structure to it and ~whoooop!~ off it goes again into WhackyRandomLand. That isn't a 'spat'. It's one person trying to have their message understood and the other person just producing reams and reams of random gibberish.

Third- I don't even know Anina. She seems nice and that she means well and yadayadayada. From the little I've seen of her, however, she doesn't seem like the kind of person I tend to actually like. Is that a problem? Does everyone have to actually like everyone else? I certainly don't think so. I mean, if we all know that you can't please all of the people all of the time, then surely it follows that sometimes we are the ones who are "displeased" with another.

Saying that, the kind of woman I tend not to like seems to follow a pattern, namely: I don't like women who don't use their brains.... Hell, I don't like *men* who don't use their brains either, but as a woman I care just a little more when women 'let the side down'. And by 'using their brains' I don't mean that someone has to be book smart or really, really brainy- they just have to have a certain level of intelligence or interest in the world that separates them from the masses. They have to be able to think clearly. I like strong women, tough women, talented women, women who have something to say. I REALLY like funny, irreverent women. I'm a sucker for a woman who can write. Honestly, though "nice" doesn't come into it. All things being equal, I'd prefer to be friends with the woman labelled by others as a 'bitch' than one who is considered 'nice'... I usually think that if a woman is considered a bitch, she's probably doing something right.

I have no time for women who think that the be all and end all of existence is looking pretty and being nice.

Here is what I think:

1. Girls should grow up valuing their Brains over their Looks.
2. Boys should grow up valuing women's Brains over their Looks. (yes, yes, I understand genetics... but your boys will have much better relationships if they desire a woman they can fondle AND talk to...)
3. Girls should grow up understanding they have control over their bodies.
4. Girls should NOT grow up believing that menstruating is a curse and something to be ashamed of (without going into a big long explanation, I believe that deep seated shame and revulsion because of a natural bodily function is at the heart of a lot of women's emotional and psychological problems... but that is for another day...)
5. Girls and women should not define themselves exclusively by their relationships with and to other people (ie to put being a mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend before being an independent person)
5. Smart women should be proud to be smart.
6. Women should show off their intelligence at every opportunity. Flaunt it.
7. Smart women need to take their place in public eye rather than 'just pretty women'.
8. Women should never feel they have to put up or shut up.
9. Women should always use their gender if it will get them ahead (I mean, if wearing a low-cut shirt at the interview will actually get you the job, then go right ahead. You'll only really *keep* the job if you can actually do it... )
10. Women and girls should always remember, 'Well-behaved women seldom make history."

So, knowing all of that, am I, as has been suggested by several people 'jealous of Anina'? Answer the question yourself. You've got brains. And I've got stuff to do...

Hacking Anina's Blog

From Anina (**edit** she has now deleted this post after I commented and explained what happened. Luckily I saved her post. This is only a snippet):"wow, it looks like someone who likes gia a lot hacked my site and put up a sign saying "anina is stealing bandwidth" which is a silly thing to write, and makes no sense to me."Now, sure, one can give her the benefit of the doubt and accept that she mightn't understand that linking directly to images on someone else's server is a pretty shitty thing to do. Maybe she doesn't really care about the culture of the 'net. Maybe she doesn't actually know what 'bandwidth' is. Maybe she doesn't understand how using images on your own site from other people's servers is actually stealing money from them. Whatever. But surely, surely, surely, SURELY she could see that the url she was linking to wasn't changed. Surely from that she could have deduced that the change happened on MY end, not hers...

And if she really wasn't able to work that out after a simple little peek at the post then I think my point has been made.

I don't have any ill-will towards Anina at all and genuinely wish her well with her projects, but again, I'd prefer to have been represented at LIFT by 'A Female Blogging Proponent' who at least understands how img src links work.

**edit** I also notice that she hasn't put up any of my comments and instead posted up an email that I asked to be kept private and NOT posted up on her blog. So, she steals bandwidth, doesn't obey email etiquette and is a proponent of censorship. Again, do I want to be represented by her? No.

Here is one thing I wrote to her yesterday which she hasn't put up:

"My "issue" with you has NOTHING to do with what you look like or if you are a woman or any of those *physical* things. None of those things to me are relevant online. At all. Yet they seem to be extremely important to you.

I don't care that Seth Godin is short and bald, I care about what he adds to the conversation about Marketing. I don't care that Robert Scoble doesn't have a six-pack, I care about what he adds to the conversation about the future of Blogging. I don't care that Jane McGonigal is cute and blonde, I care about what she's adding to the conversation about Alternate Reality Gaming. I don't care that Suw Charman is cute and blonde (another one!), I care about what she's adding to the conversation about Digital Rights...

All I wonder about is what *you* add to the conversation."

Presumably, she wasn't able to answer the question and therefore just didn't put it up.

**another edit** Anina also asked me why, when we were in the same bar one night at LIFT, I didn't say these things to her face. Then went on to say that it's just like Mena Trott said blahblahblah... My reply: "I didn't speak to you that night because I was having conversations with people about science and technology while you were running around waving glow wands. It kinda seemed inappropriate."
